The Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient technique that involves the placement of very fine, single-use, sterile needles into precise points along the body and in certain muscle groups. These needles stimulate the autonomic nervous system, the part of the body we do not have conscious control of. So, acupuncture is one of the few ways we can tap into it and help regulate it noninvasively!

The body registers each needle as a “micro-injury” and stimulates the brain to release natural painkillers (endorphins) and increase circulation to those areas to help with healing. This circulation also helps to clear out the build-up of cortisol (a hormone we get from stress) which is how it helps manage anxiety, insomnia, stress, and more.

We often pair our acupuncture treatments with bodywork, heat therapy, cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines. Research has shown that acupuncture is safe, effective, and pain-free. This therapy has been proven to decrease inflammation, increase circulation, regulate the nervous system, and benefit the cardiovascular system. In addition, acupuncture can help resolve pain, boost the immune system, balance hormones, regulate emotions, improve sleep, and digestive functions.

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Treatment

After a brief intake about your primary concerns and basic health history, your acupuncturist will walk you through the following steps.

  1. While dressed and lying on a massage table, gentle bodywork will be performed to feel certain muscle groups and channels to calm your body.
  2. At specific points on your body, 10-20 needles will be inserted, sometimes near the area of pain, while others may be along the arms or legs. While everyone’s experience differs, some have reported a slight sensation when the needle is inserted. Still, others have reported a dull pressure, a heavy feeling, buzzy, warm, or nothing.
  3. The needles will be kept in place for about 20 minutes; many people are so relaxed they often fall asleep.
  4. The needles will be removed. Many people report feeling relaxed, rested, and sometimes sleepy. Taking it easy the rest of the day will allow your body to continue to heal.
